Yesterday, Sarah from Horizon's Regional Council came to visit us to help us further understand how urban and rural runoff impact the quality of our water. We looked at images of our river catchment and stormwater drains around our city.
Next, we used a model to simulate the different ways water is contaminated and enters our waterways. We looked at how fertilisers, sediment, and excrement can be washed off farms and we also spoke about what farmers are doing to reduce this occurrence of these happening.
In the photos below you will see us squeezing bottles, sprinkling sediment, and dripping water onto the model. You will also see how planting trees and building fences can help to reduce what enters the waterway.
Look at the photos of the liquids mixing...Yuck!
